چکیده

Introduction More than 580 species of Lepidoptera (Moths and Butterflies) can be found at the HJ Andrews Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) site. The population consists of several generalist herbivores and many species with highly specialized niches. The low difficulty of light-trap sampling provides an ideal method for tracking moth population diversity as an indicator of overall ecosystem health and change-type. Here we present the preliminary findings from three novel approaches to moth population analysis. William Berk performed meadow boundary sampling in order to describe the dispersal capabilities of moths. Patrick Waters built a metapopulation model to look at intermeadow population dynamics and designed a classification algorithm for moth population habitat parameters. Sean McGregor worked with historical sampling to dynamically create Google Earth overlays and performed machine-learning analysis on the data.

Does butterfly diversity predict moth diversity? Testing a popular indicator taxon at local scales

Indicator taxa are often proposed as efficient ways of identifying conservation priorities, but the correlation between putative indicators and other taxa has not been adequately tested. We examined whether a popular indicator taxon, the butterflies, could provide a useful surrogate measure of diversity in a closely related but relatively poorly known group, the moths, at a local scale relevant...

The Foraging Ecology of the Mountain Long-Eared Bat Plecotus macrobullaris Revealed with DNA Mini-Barcodes

Molecular analysis of diet overcomes the considerable limitations of traditional techniques for identifying prey remains in bat faeces. We collected faeces from individual Mountain Long-eared Bats Plecotus macrobullaris trapped using mist nets during the summers of 2009 and 2010 in the Pyrenees. We analysed their diet using DNA mini-barcodes to identify prey species. In addition, we inferred so...

Association of insects and ergot (Claviceps purpurea) in Kentucky bluegrass seed production fields.

Insects in Kentucky bluegrass seed production fields in Oregon, Idaho, and Washington were sampled just before harvest and their association with ergot conidia of Claviceps purpurea Fr. (Tul.) was evaluated during 1996-1998. A diversity of insects was observed at all three locations. The most abundant beneficial insects collected with sweep nets were Nysium spp., Nabis spp., ichneumonid wasps, ...

Malagasy birds as hosts for eye-frequenting moths.

While tear-feeding in moths on mammals is widespread, there have been no reports of this behaviour in Madagascar and none on birds. We report that a moth, Hemiceratoides hieroglyphica belonging to the Calpini, a generally fruit-feeding or blood-feeding lineage of noctuids, attacks sleeping birds in Madagascar. This moth is able to intrude its sharply tipped proboscis into a closed bird's eye. T...

Genome Sequences of Three Novel Bunyaviruses, Two Novel Rhabdoviruses, and One Novel Nyamivirus from Washington State Moths

We report draft genome sequences of three novel bunyaviruses, two novel rhabdoviruses, and one novel nyamivirus identified metagenomically from 10 moths in Washington state.
